In the small business world, your people are your greatest assets. Your employees are not like your other business investments, however. Hiring an employee means entering into a partnership where each partner invests in the other. In the corporate world, this line of work is often called “human capital” and “human resources.” Regardless of what you call it, there is one part that can never be ignored: you are working with fellow humans. And every person has his or her own unique virtues or challenges to bring to the workplace.

There is no such thing as hiring the perfect candidate. There will always be occasions where you have to deal with performance problems on your team. And unless you’re bringing each and every employee into a shared ownership arrangement, staff will eventually leave.
